this is a good textbook on the economics of the financial sector of today's business world

This is a very good basic book about the financial markets. It goes back to the macro basics, but it helps if you have some macroeconomics background.
The language is very clear and there are interesting examples. In terms of depth, it is probably more of an undergrad book (with a few incursions in graduate level material).
