Original Shannara Trilogy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Original Shannara Trilogy consists of the first three Shannara novels (The Sword of Shannara, The Elfstones of Shannara and The Wishsong of Shannara) by Terry Brooks. Though not originally written as a trilogy, the novels were recently published as The Sword of Shannara Trilogy by Del Rey. Terry Brooks' bibliography on his official website, however, lists the books as The Original Shannara Trilogy.
Unlike the other three main Shannara series, each book in this series is a stand-alone novel.
The Sword of Shannara
The first novel of The Original Shannara Trilogy chronicles the adventures of the brothers Shea and Flick Ohmsford in their quest to retrieve the titular weapon to defeat the Warlock Lord who threatens the Four Lands.

The Elfstones of Shannara
The second novel of The Original Shannara Trilogy follows Shea's grandson, Wil Ohmsford as he aids the endangered Elven nation.

The Wishsong of Shannara
The final novel of The Original Shannara Trilogy details the quest of Jair and Brin Ohmsford, the children of Wil, to save the Four Lands from the evil magic within a tome called the Ildatch.

The Chronicles of Narnia

The Narnia books

“Narnia” redirects here. For other uses, see Narnia (disambiguation).
The Chronicles of Narnia is a series of seven fantasy novels for children written by C. S. Lewis. It is considered a classic of children's literature and is the author's best-known work, having sold over 100 million copies in 41 languages. Written by Lewis between 1949 and 1954 and illustrated by Pauline Baynes, The Chronicles of Narnia have been adapted several times, complete or in part, for radio, television, stage, and cinema.
The series contains many allusions to traditional Christian ideas, presented in a format designed to make them easily accessible to younger readers; however, the books can also be read purely for their adventure, colour, and richness of ideas, and as a result have become favourites of children and adults, Christians and non-Christians alike. (They had, for example, considerable success in their Israeli Hebrew translation.)[citation needed] In addition to employing Christian themes, Lewis also borrows characters and ideas from Greek and Roman mythology, as well as from traditional British and Irish fairy tales.
The Chronicles of Narnia present the adventures of children who play central roles in the unfolding history of the fictional realm of Narnia, a place where animals talk, magic is common, and good battles evil. Each of the books (with the exception of The Horse and His Boy) feature as their protagonists children from our world who are magically transported to Narnia, where they are called upon to help the lion Aslan set some wrong to right.

Winnie-the-Pooh

Winnie-the-Pooh

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Edward 'Winnie-the-Pooh' Bear, sometimes referred to as Pooh, is a fictional bear created by A. A. Milne. He appears in the books Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) and The House at Pooh Corner (1928). Milne also included several poems about Winnie-the-Pooh in the children’s poetry books When We Were Very Young and Now We Are Six. All four volumes were illustrated by E. H. Shepard.

The hyphen was later dropped when Walt Disney Productions adapted the Pooh stories into a series of Winnie the Pooh featurettes which became one of the company's most successful franchises worldwide.

The Pooh stories have been translated into many languages, notably including Alexander Lenard's Latin translation, Winnie ille Pu, which was first published in 1958, and, in 1960, became the first foreign-language book to be featured on the New York Times Bestseller List, and is the only book in Latin to have ever been featured therein.

There's a new genetic cure for drug addiction--is it worse than the disease?

We live in a time of momentous scientific leaps; a time when it's possible to sell our eggs and sperm online for thousands of dollars; test our spouses for genetic maladies and even frame someone for a genetic crime.

We live in a time when one fifth of all our genes are owned by someone else, and an unsuspecting person and his family can be pursued cross-country because they happen to have certain valuable genes within their chromosomes. . . .

It's up to Metcalf to change the course of history. He's done it before.
For Metcalf, returning to Russia is also a personal mission that will stretch across three continents and fifty years into his past where the loyalties of a former love-a woman both impossibly beautiful and possibly treacherous-were tested; where the shadow of a Nazi assassin still haunts; a debauched German aristocrat manipulated the destiny of everyone he touched. Catch Me if You Can

Catch Me if You Can

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(Redirected from Catch me if you can)

Catch Me If You Can is a 2002 motion picture set in the 1960s. It was directed by Steven Spielberg and adapted by Jeff Nathanson loosely from the book by Frank Abagnale Jr. and Stan Redding.

The movie states that it was inspired by the true life story of Abagnale; the movie diverges somewhat from the real events as reported in Abagnale's book on his exploits.

It is also arguably Spielberg's most offbeat film. The film was a critical and commercial success and is well regarded for John Williams' score and its unique title sequence. The lead actors were Leonardo DiCaprio (as Abagnale) and Tom Hanks (as his FBI pursuer), with a supporting role by Christopher Walken (as Abagnale's father). Williams and Walken were nominated for Academy Awards.

The Purpose Driven Life

The Purpose Driven Life

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Purpose Driven Life (2002) is an advice book written by Christian author Rick Warren and published by Zondervan. The book has been on the New York Times Bestseller list for advice books for 174 weeks (as of May 2006). The book offers readers a 40-day personal spiritual journey, and presents what Warren says are God's five purposes for human life on Earth. As of November 2005, The Purpose Driven Life has been translated into 56 languages and was the bestselling book in the world for 2003, 2004, and 2005. It has won numerous literary awards[citation needed].

Since September 2002, over 30,000 congregations, corporations, and sports teams across the United States have participated in a "40 Days of Purpose" emphasis. A May 2005 survey of American pastors and ministers conducted by George Barna asked Christian leaders to identify what books were the most influential on their lives and ministries. The Purpose Driven Life was the most frequent response. The Purpose Driven Church, Warren's previous book, was the second most frequent response[citation needed]. The book has sold over 24 million copies (as of November, 2005)[citation needed].

After hostage Ashley Smith read Chapter 32 to her captor Brian Nichols (who shot four people in Atlanta on March 11, 2005), the book hit number one on several religion and advice best-seller lists - including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Publishers Weekly. However, this wholesome advertisement for the book was undermined in September of that year, when Smith admitted in her memoirs that she had also pacified her captor with crystal methamphetamine [1]

Rich Dad, Poor Dad is written in what is meant to be an entertaining anecdotal manner to make finances interesting. The most central element stressed by Kiyosaki is the advocacy of owning the system or means of production, rather than being an employee of someone else.

The Da Vinci Code

The Da Vinci Code
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about the novel. For information on the movie, see The Da Vinci Code (film). For other uses, see The Da Vinci Code (disambiguation).
The Da Vinci Code is a mystery/detective novel by American author Dan Brown, published in 2003 by Doubleday.
Scholars maintain this novel is based on the controversial premise that there is a conspiracy within the Roman Catholic Church to cover up the true story of Jesus. The novel has helped generate popular interest in speculation concerning the Holy Grail legend and the role of Mary Magdalene in the history of Christianity. According to the premise of the novel, the Vatican knows it is living a lie, but continues to do so to keep itself in power.
Dan Brown's novel was a smash hit in 2003, even rivaling the sales of the highly popular Harry Potter series.[1] It spawned a number of offspring books and drew glowing reviews from the New York Times, People Magazine and the Washington Post.[2] It also re-ignited interest in the history of the Roman Catholic Church. As well as re-invigorating interest in the church, The Da Vinci Code has also spawned numerous "knockoffs" (as they are referred to by Publishers Weekly),[3] or novels that have a striking resemblance to The Da Vinci Code, including Raymond Khoury's The Last Templar, and The Templar Legacy by Steve Berry.
It is a worldwide bestseller with more than 60.5 million copies in print (as of May 2006) and has been translated into 44 languages. It is thought to be the eleventh best-selling book of all time. Combining the detective, thriller and conspiracy fiction genres, the book is the second book by Dan Brown to include the character Robert Langdon, the first being Brown's 2000 novel, Angels and Demons. In November 2004, Random House published a "Special Illustrated Edition", with 160 illustrations interspersed with the text.
In 2006, a film adaptation, The Da Vinci Code, was released by Columbia Pictures.

Who moved my Cheese

Who Moved My Cheese?
The Phenomenon

The story of Who Moved My Cheese? was created by Dr. Spencer Johnson to help him deal with a difficult change in his life. It showed him how to take his changing situation seriously but not take himself so seriously.

When his friends noticed how much better lifehad become for him, and asked why, Dr. Johnson shared his “Cheese” story. Many later commented how hearing the story had helped them to keep their sense of humor, to change, and to gain something better, too.

Two decades after the story was created, Who Moved My Cheese? was finally published. It soon became a #1 international bestseller, with one million hardcover copies in print within the first sixteen months and over ten million copies within the next two years.

Some critics do not understand why so many people find the book so valuable. They say the story is simple enough for a child to understand, and it insults their intelligence. Some even fear it suggests that people should mindlessly conform to unnecessary changes imposed by others, although that is not in the story.

The author has commented that both the fans and the critics are “right” in their own way. It is not what is in the story of Who Moved My Cheese? but how you interpret it and apply it to your own situation that gives it value.

Hopefully the way you interpret the story of Who Moved My Cheese? and put it into action in your life will help you find and enjoy the “New Cheese” you deserve
