"Biology" is a comprehensive introductory biology textbook for non-majors or mixed-majors courses that covers biology in a traditional order from the structure and function of the cell to the organization of the biosphere. The book, which centers on the evolution and diversity of organisms, is appropriate for a one- or two-semester course. It's no wonder that Sylvia Mader's "Biology" continues to be a text that's appreciated as much by instructors as it is by the students who use it. The ninth edition is the epitome of Mader's expertise: its concise, precise writing uses an economy of words to present the material as succinctly and clearly as possible, thereby enabling students - even non-majors - to understand the concepts without necessarily asking the instructor to explain further.

I needed the 10th ed for a class. I ordered this one for the value. My teacher allowed me to use the older book so I was able to save over $100. This book is very similar and is supported by the online site features. Outlines, flashcards, etc... The book was clean of highlighting, a little worn in spots, but in good condition. I will keep as a reference for my next class. Overall I was pleased.

The book is very good for a general biology class is goes into detail but still keeps it general, and the author's personal opinions are not included and no ridiculous facts are included. It is just straight to the point a great book.

This was the required textbook for an online introductory Biology course I had to take.
The writer has the lazy habit of making statements that are almost, but not quite, true. Also, the "correct answers" for the quizzes and exams associated with this book sometimes (about 5% of the time, in my experience) directly contradict statements made in the textbook.
Don't buy this textbook unless it's required for a class you're taking. There have to be better alternatives out there.
