 "good reference" 2010-04-07

By Constance, loves dogs & books, in no particular order (California)

I purchased this book to give to a friend who is struggling in high school Biology. She and her college-age tutor say it is very useful to look up and get a different take on the material. Plus, her textbook isn't very good so this book aids the whole process of learning the material.

Her tutor told her to keep it through college too, so the tutor liked it too.

Ever wondered how the food you eat becomes the energy your body needs to keep going? If DNA is a set of instructions in your cells, how does it tell your cells what to do? How does your brain know what your feet are doing? The theory of evolution says that humans and chimps descended from a common ancestor, but does it tell us how and why? We humans are insatiably curious creatures who can’t help wondering how things work – starting with our own bodies. Wouldn’t it be great to have a single source of quick answers to all our questions about how living things work? Now there is.

From molecules to animals, cells to ecosystems, Biology For Dummies answers all your questions about how living things work. Written in plain English and packed with dozens of illustrations, quick-reference “Cheat Sheets and helpful tables and diagrams, it can get you quickly up to speed on what you need to know to:

  • Understand how cells work

  • Ge t a handle on the chemi stry of life

  • Find out how food becomes energy

  • Get to know your body’s systems

  • Decode the secrets of DNA

  • Find out what evolution is and isn’t and how it works

  • Take a peek into the lives of bacteria

  • Explore how viruses do their thing

Most basic biology books take a very round about approach, dividing things up according to different types of organisms. Biology For Dummies cuts right to the chase with fast-paced, easy-to-absorb explanations of the life processes common to all organisms. Topics covered include:

  • How plants and animals get nutrients

  • How organisms transport nutrients and expel waste

  • How nutrients are transformed into energy

  • How energy is used to sustain life

  • How organisms breathe

  • How organisms reproduce

  • How organisms evolve into new life-forms

  • How organisms create ecosystems

With this engaging guide in your corner, you’ll get a grip on complex biology concepts and unlock the mysteries of how life works in no time – no advanced degrees required.

 "Interestingly good read" 2009-05-26

By Just Another Eukaryote

I wholeheartedly recommend the Biology for Dummies book to everyday people or prospective students in the subject matter. It provides a good review of biology down to the cells and the beginning of life continuing to the inner workings of the human body. I admit that I have not completed the book yet. It can be complex such as the Krebs cycle but keeps me interested enough to want to know more. My boyfriend, a self-proclaimed geek, is facinated with the details on life. We both enjoy learning about it through this book.

"muddled thinking and weak presentation" 2007-01-03

By Andrew Kuprat (Richland, WA USA)

As a mathematician with no biology background

who needed to quickly learn some

basic facts in the field, I was hoping a 'for dummies' book would

be a quick and worthwhile read.

I was anticipating that the book would be at the freshman college

level. When I received the book, it was clear (from the introduction)

that it was intended for a high school audience. Moreover, the

presentation of basic physics concepts as they apply in

biology --- e.g. osmosis --- was so dumbed down and muddled as

to actually be incomprehensible to me. Finally, the author tries

to make up for poor presentation of the material with frequent humor

which unfortunately is not actually funny and further distracts the

reader. This book was very disappointing and of no use to me.

"A good book for making biology easier." 2004-08-28

By Maria (USA)

I found this book easier to understand then my regular required college biology textbook. Chapters on evolution and ecosystems were very interesting to me. I also would reference this book when I came across a hard topic in my college bio textbook. Donna Rae Siegfried does a good job of explaining hard topics into simplier forms to understand. I also highly recommend

Volume 1 isbn;1933023007

Volume 2 isbn;1933023015

Volume 3 isbn;1933023023

"Biology" is a comprehensive introductory biology textbook for non-majors or mixed-majors courses that covers biology in a traditional order from the structure and function of the cell to the organization of the biosphere. The book, which centers on the evolution and diversity of organisms, is appropriate for a one- or two-semester course. It's no wonder that Sylvia Mader's "Biology" continues to be a text that's appreciated as much by instructors as it is by the students who use it. The ninth edition is the epitome of Mader's expertise: its concise, precise writing uses an economy of words to present the material as succinctly and clearly as possible, thereby enabling students - even non-majors - to understand the concepts without necessarily asking the instructor to explain further.

"Great Book not much fluff" 2009-07-18

By Phenomenal S. G. Drea (Augusta GA)

 "Simply terrible" 2009-03-22

By Jared B. (San Francisco, CA USA)

This was the required textbook for an online introductory Biology course I had to take.

The writer has the lazy habit of making statements that are almost, but not quite, true. Also, the "correct answers" for the quizzes and exams associated with this book sometimes (about 5% of the time, in my experience) directly contradict statements made in the textbook.

Don't buy this textbook unless it's required for a class you're taking. There have to be better alternatives out there.

 "a little too simple" 2009-11-18

By Justin S. Jamali (michigan)

so i started going on a binge of buying a lot of these types of books because i was so pleased with organic chemistry for dummies. which if you are taking organic chemistry i really recommend as a must have book. i always make sure to check the reviews first to make sure they are good, but i am always displeased. i end up wasting time i could be spending with my required textbooks from school, or resources and practice problems the instructor provided. if you are in a college level course they are often a bit too simple. such as this book. it skims over and maybe lightens up some details you might find useful, but a hardcore biology course goes into the real nooks and crannies of biology which you just cannot get from a 200 page summary book. i dont know what everyone's classes are like, but i know that your ultimate goal in a class is to be able to answer test questions and bring home those A's, and i dont believe this book provides resources to answer any of the tough questions presented in a serious college level course. also a lot of professors base their tests around the book they require. just read your required book and if it doesnt make sense read it again, and if it doesnt make sense, read it again, and if it doesnt make sense, read it again. that is my rant.
